The Cornish Prospecting History
In 1869 John Deason and Richard Oates two Cornishman were prospecting for gold in Moliagul, Victoria Australia, when they found the largest gold nugget discovered. It was buried beneath two roots of a tree in a river bed of red clay. The welcome stranger nugget had to be broken on an anvil before it could be weighed at the bank. It weighed gross, over 2,520 troy ounces (78 kg) and returned over 2,284 troy ounces (71.0 kg) net. It eclipsed the Welcome Nugget found eleven years earlier in Ballarat and was worth £1,000,000 then.
